Short Art Courses 2012

This year we are delighted to offer non-residential one day and weekend courses in a variety of art and craft disciplines. For the Weekend courses we provide lunch from the Garden Arms Hotel and evening meals can also be pre-ordered (not included in cost of the course). For those travelling from a distance we can give you contact details for local bed and breakfast providers for a comfortable stay over.
A minimum number must be reached for the course to run so drop us a line to register your interest. Materials are provided unless otherwise stated. All courses are at the High St Studio in Gardenstown. (As our regulars know, parking is limited near the Studio, so we'll be in touch beforehand to co-ordinate spaces).

Felt Making - with Ulrike Muehle
An increasingly popular craft technique, felt making is known to have been
practised as far back as 600BC. By rubbing together wool fibres a dense mat is created that can go on to create shoes, hats, bags, blankets and even a yurt, - useful if you live on the steppe - or maybe even Aberdeenshire. This weekend Ulrike will introduce you first to the basic skills (to ensure you can continue working at home), by making a picture or hanging. On the second day you will go on to create your own object, for example a bag. All materials are provided, a brilliantly coloured range of Merino wool and lots of different fibres which result in great textural effects. You can see Ulrike's work at www.woolly-felt-design.co.uk/
Date: 12th and 13th May. 10am to 4pm each day
Cost: £139.00 Includes materials and lunch both days.
Clay Modelling - with Carn Standing
This is an opportunity to learn from a master of
modelling wildlife in clay. Carn has received numerous commissions for his animal studies in bronze and ceramic, and over the two days will show you the key skills in portraying the volume, detail and character of your chosen creature. You can take home your piece and continue to work on it, or it can be fired and finished here (at an extra cost). Materials provided. You can see Carn's work at www.artistcarn.com.
Date: 28th and 29th July. 10am to 4.30pm each day.
Cost: £139.00 Includes materials and lunch both days.

Papermaking - with Alison Simpson
A weekend introduction to the techniques (and a little theory) involved in hand papermaking and the creative uses you can put it to. You’ll start with basic papermaking using plant based and vintage papers, going on to experiment with inclusions, layering with colours and embossing. To create unique artworks you're encouraged to bring along items that mean something to you, that can be included in the re-invented paper, such as old clothes (cotton and linen), old paper and plant fibres from the wild or your garden. You can see Alison's work at www.alison-simpson.co.uk.
Date: 11th and 12th
Cost: £139.00 Includes materials and lunch both days.
Creative Crush - with Carla and Bryan Angus
Something we're really looking forward to (but difficult to select an image for!) - a weekend jam packed with creative projects where the group is constantly given new challenges with short timescales to complete. There will be parameters to work to - but rules are meant to be bent and inventive outcomes are more important. If you feel stuck in a rut in the way you approach - well anything - then maybe this weekend of rampant creative fun is for you.
Date: 6th and 7th October. Time 10am to 4.30pm Sat and Sun
